Square Enix have announced that a new entry in the long-running Tomb Raider franchise is on the way, taking to the series’ official Twitter account to deliver the news.
“A new Tomb Raider game is coming,” reads Square Enix’s tweet, which we’ve embedded for you below.

Beyond this rather brief message, Square didn’t go into any details about the game itself. No name was announced, no screens, no trailers, not even which platforms the game would arrive on or a hint at a release window.
Here’s something else: Square Enix still haven’t confirmed who is actually making the new Tomb Raider game. Crystal Dynamics have headed up the last decade’s worth of instalments including 2013’s Tomb Raider and 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider, but their names have not been included in the Twitter announcement, nor have they interacted with the tweet at all.
It may be that Crystal Dynamics isn’t working on the game at all. It’s known that the developer have had their heads down working on an Avengers game as part of Square Enix’s deal with Marvel.
Indeed, the only info we have to go on so far comes from gaming historian Liam Robertson who noticed that Square’s announcement may confirm a 2016 leak about a game allegedly called Shadow of the Tomb Raider developed by Deus Ex studio Eidos Montreal. Robertson correctly points out that the first letter of each sentence in the announcement spells out the word “SHADOW.” Whether this is intentional on Square’s part or just a happy co-incidence remains to be seen.
