For those playing at home, the third season of Veep is without question the best of the hilarious HBO series so far. The arc of the 10 episode third season takes us through the Vice President’s campaign towards becoming President in the next election, while she continues her often mundane tasks as Veep. It all leads to an unexpected conclusion (including that brilliant bathroom scene between Julia and Tony Hale) setting up the fourth season nicely.
As the “Veep”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is nothing short of phenomenal. The supporting cast are all amazing, especially Tony Hale as Gary Walsh, but as much as this is an ensemble TV series, Julia is what makes the show unmissable. And they have some perfectly written scripts to work with, which doesn’t hurt. The competitive nature of Dan Egan (Reid Scott) and Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky) makes for some great viewing as well.
Veep is one of the best – not to mention funniest – shows on TV right now. Though you could get started from the third season and work it out from there, we do recommend starting from the first episode of the third season – because it will make the payoff of this series all the better. Unmissable television, even if you don’t know a thing about American politics.
Series Review Score: FIVE STARS (OUT OF FIVE)
The special features on the Australian DVD release are limited but well produced. There are deleted and extended scenes for most episodes which are well packaged and presented. The final four episodes of the series also feature commentary from Julia Louis Dreyfus alongside other cast and crew. They provide some great insight into some of the series more pivotal moments – and it’s really worth listening to the commentary on the hilarious bathroom sequence in the game changing ninth episode.
