This August, the twelfth annual Arab Film Festival Australia returns to cinemas with an array of stunning feature films and four shorts. Festival co -director, Fadia Abboud, is particularly thrilled with this year’s variety, stating they will “push boundaries both physically and ideologically”.
From a small Lebanese coastal village, to the racetracks of Palestine, to the iconic backdrop of the Arabian desert, the festival gives audiences the best of contemporary Arab films. Although conflict continues to dominate the representation of the Arab world, the filmmakers delve into rich and race stories allowing the culture to speak for itself, challenging stereotypes and creating new frontiers.
Featuring must-sees “Ghadi” and “In the Sands of Babylon”, this year’s festival showcases the best of a diverse scope of cinema from Jordan to Egypt.
